When?
The 5th Torino Nice Rally starts in Turn ~9am on the 7th September 2020. Pre-ride dinner will be 7pm onwards on the 6th September, at the same place as the start (location details TBC later on).
Why the need for entry?
Because if I can't manage numbers and liabilities and keep this event under conditions set by Turin authorities (numbers, management etc), it's not fair or possible to carry on. Un-entered riders turning up on the start day to tag along could risk this whole thing so I really appreciate the way it's been respected and self-regulated so well so far. Thanks.
How will you get to Turin?
The TNR would like to discourage flying and the best things on a bike come from new journeys. A flight to and from Turin/Nice area from the UK or Berlin is around 0.25 to 0.35 Tonnes of CO2 emissions per passenger. For approximately every 25 riders who fly to the TNR from the UK, Scandinavia, Germany or the Netherlands, we create the C02 footprint of the average European resident in one year (7.5 to 8 Tonnes). And that average footprint needs to come down to only one Tonne a year fast, to avoid really f-ing things up. Big changes. Whatever you think of climate change science it won’t hurt anyone to cut back on our impact and flying is a big part of it. In this case it should be a really positive experience - ride to the start or get a train, use European Bike Express to Grenoble and ride to Turin if you’re in the UK, ride home after, it’s all great. Flying with a boxed bike is just stress anyway.
I appreciate that we don’t all have the time to use alternatives, yet that time/convenience need is part of this environmental problem. All I'm asking is that you think about it and if you can make train or bike travel work, please do.

HOW TO ENTER / ENTRY INFO – please read this first,
- The number of entries available is limited, as every year. Riders who didn’t get a place last year have been offered a place this year and though the take-up so far has been low they do have until near the end of this entry process to confirm attendance. That roll-over doesn’t apply to this year’s entries (sorry), it was as a consolation in the first year that the draw system was used.
- The draw application will be open for a few weeks from (19th Jan) with notice given here before it closes. The aim is not to get as many cards as possible as that creates more disappointment. The draw application will close when we have ~2x the number of applicants as the number of places.
- Women who bikepack and tour get automatic entry – you’ll need to send in a postcard to enter but you go into the ‘In’ pile straight away. The reasons for this have been posted on the site before, but put simply this is to encourage a more balanced mix of riders and the TNR should be a place where solo female riders find other women to ride with if they want to.
- M-F Couples – a benefit for you, based on the automatic entry for women. You both need to enter on the same card (see point below about group entries) and you both get automatic entry. Entries from one woman with 2 or 3 men on the same card don’t count as a couple entry, as open-minded as we might be to whatever type of relationship works for you.
- GROUP ENTRY, 2 or more riders – this is important … if a group of you want to ride together you need to enter on the same single postcard. It’s the only way to be sure you all get to ride together if drawn. Statistically for a group of 3, your odds of a pick are (eg) 1 in 200 on the first draw if you’re on the same card vs 1 in 202, 1 in 201 then 1 in 200 if on 3 separate cards. It works anyway, someone smarter than me explained how/why last year.
- Deadline for applications for the draw will be announced here, based on getting close to a fair limit of applications and fair time for post to arrive. Estimated closure date is mid February. Postcards arriving a bit late but applied-for in time and postmarked with a valid date will get into the draw.
- What happens if you enter and can’t make it? It’s easy for us both - there’s no reserve lists or transfers made as I can’t manage that in a fair way, just let me know please so I can maintain the entry list. For this reason please only enter if you’re as sure as you can be that you can make it.
HOW TO ACTUALLY ENTER >
- Fill out the form below to apply to enter the draw.
- You’ll get an email reply to your form entry within a few days (they’re done manually) – follow the instructions in that email, ie send in a postcard to the address in the email. That doesn’t mean you have a place / are entered yet though, sorry - there's more -
- Your postcard gets you into the draw for places. You'll know your postcard has arrived as it'll appear on the TNR Instagram (I can't reliably confirm receipt individually) - like these https://www.instagram.com/p/BsunU2-lvcc/
- The postcard draw will happen around the end of February.
- There will be emails out to confirm those who were lucky or unlucky in the draw. This should be done asap early March, if not sooner. Riders who have a place will get further info via the 5th TNR mail list.
- The riders who are offered a place via the draw will need to sign up to the Terms of Entry and pay a small fee (it was £1 last year) to formalise the entry terms, just to clarify liability and expectations.

- Make a donation directly to Smart Shelter Foundation by clicking here (scroll for paypal link). Minimum suggested donation is £10/12 Euro for the patch only but that's just a guide. If you want more patches or a 4th TNR card (while they last) just add something to your donation. If you want it posting to somewhere outside the EU please add a couple of £/Euro extra?
- Email torinonicerally AT gmail.com - email title 'DIY TNR patches' - with your name, address and a receipt for your donation (a scan, forwarded paypal note, etc). Also tell us how many patches you donated for.
- It's important you include name, address, donation receipt and the number and type (DIY) of patches you donated for : ) and it helps me keep track if you title your email 'DIY TNR patches'. Thanks.
